How Canva Helped Me Build a Business from Scratch and Start Making Money

Posted by Clara Voss on November 13, 2024

If you’d told me a few years ago that I’d be running my own business, I might have laughed. The idea seemed far-fetched, especially since I didn’t have a background in design or any fancy tools. Yet here I am, sharing the story of how one tool — Canva — helped me start from nothing and turn an idea into a profitable business.

The Spark of an Idea

It all started with a simple problem: I wanted to create professional-looking social media posts and marketing materials for a blog I had launched, but I didn’t have the budget for expensive software or a designer. I spent hours struggling with basic tools, trying to put together visuals that would look professional but always feeling disappointed with the results. One night, I stumbled upon Canva. The app was advertised as a user-friendly design tool, promising high-quality results without the need for advanced skills. Skeptical but curious, I decided to give it a try.

My First Design and the Canva Revelation

My first attempt on Canva was creating a blog banner. Right away, I was blown away by how intuitive the platform was. The drag-and-drop interface, paired with a huge library of templates and assets, made designing feel accessible. I didn't have to guess what looked good — Canva’s templates made it easy to create something that looked polished and professional with just a few clicks.

That first design might not have been groundbreaking, but it gave me confidence. Canva made me feel like a designer, even though I had no experience in the field. I realized that with this tool, I could create stunning visuals — not only for my blog but maybe even for other people.

From Hobby to Side Hustle

At first, I used Canva to design images for my blog and social media. But then, something interesting happened. A friend of mine noticed my posts and asked if I could help design a flyer for her local business. That was the first time I thought, Could I make money with this? She was thrilled with the design and even paid me a small fee.

The word spread quickly among my friends and their networks. Soon enough, I found myself designing flyers, Instagram posts, logos, and even e-books for small businesses and online entrepreneurs. Canva had transformed what was once just a hobby into a potential side hustle. I started getting paid for my work, and as the requests grew, I realized I could actually turn this into a legitimate business.

Developing My Brand

One of the best parts of using Canva was the ability to create a consistent brand identity. I’d always seen larger companies with cohesive color schemes, fonts, and logos, and I admired how it made them recognizable. Canva’s Brand Kit allowed me to set my own brand colors, fonts, and logo, so every piece I created was instantly identifiable as my work.

This wasn’t just useful for my own blog and social media channels; it also gave me a professional edge when working with clients. Canva allowed me to offer them a level of consistency that made their own brands look more professional, and they appreciated it. As my portfolio grew, I started positioning myself as someone who could provide a full suite of design services, from branding to social media graphics to marketing materials. The professionalism that Canva allowed me to project led to more and bigger projects.

Expanding My Services

Once I gained confidence with Canva, I realized the tool could help me expand my services even further. Canva isn’t just for social media graphics — it has templates for everything from resumes to presentations to product mockups. I began exploring these templates, using Canva to create digital products like e-books, planners, and digital worksheets. These digital products became an easy way for me to generate passive income, as I could design them once and sell them repeatedly.

Canva even allowed me to create branded merch mockups and product presentations. By branching out into these areas, I could offer my clients more than just a few social media posts. I became a one-stop shop for small businesses looking to polish their online presence and create a cohesive brand. The demand for my services skyrocketed, and I soon found myself with more clients than I’d ever imagined.

Building an Online Portfolio and Attracting Clients

As I honed my skills on Canva, I started posting my designs on social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest. Canva’s export options made it easy to get high-quality images for my online portfolio. I even used Canva to design my portfolio itself, creating a sleek, organized document that showcased my best work.

My online portfolio turned into a powerful marketing tool. Clients could see the variety and quality of the designs I could produce, which gave them confidence in my abilities. My social media posts acted as free advertising, drawing in clients who were interested in giving their own brands a fresh look. Over time, I started receiving inquiries not just from friends and acquaintances, but from small business owners and entrepreneurs I had never met. Canva was indirectly bringing me business, and I didn’t have to spend a cent on paid advertising.

Working Smarter, Not Harder

One thing I quickly learned as my client list grew was the importance of efficiency. Canva’s features, like templates and reusable designs, allowed me to streamline my workflow. I created template folders for common designs that clients requested, which saved me hours of work. When a new project came in, I could simply adjust an existing template to fit the client’s needs rather than starting from scratch every time.

The time saved allowed me to take on more clients and maintain a high standard of work without burning out. I could dedicate more attention to personal touches and customization, while still delivering designs promptly. Canva essentially became my virtual design assistant, helping me optimize my time and maximize my earnings.

Scaling My Business and Increasing My Revenue

Once I was confident in my design skills, I started to look for ways to scale my business. I began offering packaged services that bundled multiple design elements together. For example, I created a “Social Media Makeover” package that included branded Instagram posts, story templates, a logo, and a highlight cover set. Clients loved the convenience of having all their design needs met in one place, and this approach increased my revenue significantly.

In addition to client work, I began selling my own Canva templates on platforms like Etsy and Gumroad. These were templates I’d created and refined over time, and now they were passive income sources. Other entrepreneurs and content creators could purchase them and customize them with their own branding. This side revenue eventually matched, and then surpassed, my income from individual client work.

Reflecting on the Journey

Canva allowed me to go from a complete design novice to a small business owner without needing to learn complex software or invest in expensive tools. It gave me the creative freedom to explore my ideas and the business tools to turn those ideas into income. I didn’t have to be a design expert to succeed; I just had to be willing to learn and experiment.

Today, my business is thriving, and I owe a lot of my success to Canva. It’s amazing to think that a single tool could open so many doors and give me the confidence to call myself a business owner. Canva empowered me to take control of my creative and financial future, and it’s a tool I’ll continue to rely on as I grow and evolve.

If you’re considering starting a side hustle, a business, or even just improving your own brand’s look, Canva is an invaluable tool. It gave me the power to make my visions a reality, and if it could help me build a business from scratch, I have no doubt it can do the same for anyone willing to try.
